Fire safety

Australian fire fighters respond to over 13,000 building fires every year. Most house fires start from cooking that is left alone. Electrical appliances and faults, heaters, cigarettes and candles are other common causes of house fires.

  • In NSW, every home must have a smoke alarm on each level
  • Some other states in Australia also require smoke alarms in all bedrooms and living spaces (including hallways and stairways)
  • Make sure your smoke alarm works by testing it every month and replace the smoke alarm every 10 years
  • Also remember to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms every year. You can do this when you change your clocks for daylight savings as a reminder.

Prepare a home fire escape plan and practice it with all of the family. Make sure there are 2 ways out of each room where possible, as well as out of the house. Teach your child to “Get Down Low and Go, Go, Go” in case of a house fire.

Teach your child that if their clothing catches fire they should STOP, DROP, COVER (face) and ROLL. Call Triple Zero (000) in case of an emergency.
