The Kids Health Promotion Unit is the health promotion team of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. We aim to keep children and young people across NSW healthy, safe and out of hospital. Our team works to meet these aims through health and safety promotion, advocacy, information provision and education.
Health promotion is defined as the process of enabling people to increase control over the determinants of health and thereby improve their health. To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being an individual or group must be able to identify and realise aspirations, to satisfy needs and to change or cope with the environment.(1)
Health, is therefore, more than the absence of disease. It is a positive concept that emphasises physical, mental and social well-being.
The Unit consists of the Health Promotion team, the Kids Health Bookshop and a small lending library. Health Promotion staff have professional qualifications and experience in health promotion, public health and injury prevention.
The Kids Health Bookshop is based at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Level 2 (street level), off the Galleria (main walkway), opposite The Parent and Carer Resource Centre and is open Monday to Friday (except Public Holidays) 9.00am and 4.00pm.
