Vaccinations in pregnancy

Vaccinations for influenza and whooping cough (pertussis) while you are pregnant protect you and your baby.

  • Newborn babies are too young to be vaccinated and are at a higher risk of serious complications if they get influenza or whooping cough
  • Vaccination during pregnancy will protect your baby after they are born
  • The whooping cough vaccine is offered between 20 and 32 weeks in pregnancy. It is more than 90% effective in preventing whooping cough in babies
  • The influenza vaccination can be given at any time in pregnancy
  • These recommended vaccinations are provided FREE from your GP, under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

Anyone who will have close contact with your baby should also get vaccinated for whooping cough. This should happen if they haven’t been vaccinated in the past 10 years and at least 2 weeks before your baby is born.
