Poison first-aid

The Poisons Information Centre offers free advice on any poisoning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If your child has been poisoned, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 and follow the first aid advice below.

Swallowed poisonPoison, poison first aid

  • Don’t try to make your child vomit
  • Pick up the container and your child  and take them to the telephone
  • Call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26         

Poison on the skinPoison, poison first aid

  • Remove any clothing that has touched the poison, taking care not to touch the poison yourself
  • Wash the skin with lots of cool running water
  • Wash gently with soap and water and rinse well
  • Call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26         

Poison in the eyePoison, poison first aid

  • Wash the eye with water from a cup, jug or a slowly running tap. Continue for 10-15 minutes, holding the eyelids open
  • Call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26         

Inhaled poisonPoison, poison first aid

  • Get the child to fresh air quickly, without placing yourself at risk
  • Open doors and windows wide, if it is safe to do so
