Cycling, or riding a bike, is a popular form of transport and a healthy and enjoyable outdoor activity for children. A bike helmet that fits properly reduces the chance of head and brain injury by 63-88%.
Safety tips
- Always make sure your child is wearing a helmet when they ride their bike. The helmet must fit properly and have a sticker certifying that it meets Australian and New Zealand standards (AS/NZS 2063)
- Set a good example by wearing a helmet when you are riding a bike
- Teach your child about traffic rules and road signs
- Always supervise children under 10 years of age when they are riding their bike around roads
- In NSW, children under the age of 16 and the adult who is supervising them are allowed to ride their bikes on the footpath, unless there are signs that say you can’t
- Always keep to the left when riding bikes and watch out for people walking on the footpath
- Make sure there is a bell, horn or other warning device on your child’s bike and check that the brakes are working
- Wear helmets, wrist, elbow and knee guards when using skateboards, scooters, roller blades and roller skates.
